I learned to knit when I was in the Brownies, so that would mean I’ve been knitting for over 50 years!
I am thinking it has been about three years. I started by knitting some beaded belts and then many months later I really got knitting! What fun!

I have been knittiing for a little over a year now, thanks to some very patient and kind friends ;) Kara- wondering how the magic loop went for you with Matt’s socks? Thinking of trying it out for sleeves on a sweater for one of my kiddos….thoughts or advice??
Hey Erin! I’m having great luck with magic loop and would definitely recommend it for the sleeves. You just have to make sure you’re working with a long enough cord on the circular. I think it needs to be at least 32″. Also, the video I watched mentioned that at the beginning of each row you want to pull the yarn a little snug for the first stitch which was a great tip so that you don’t end up with ladders. Highly recommend it, for me it’s much more comfortable and more relaxing than working with DPNs.

My Grandmother taught me to knit when I was young & I never really “took” to it. I picked it up again last spring & have been knitting up a storm ever since! (my grandmother is still around & very impressed with my new found passion for knitting!)
My grandmother taught me to knit about 25 years ago. However, I’ve only been serious about it for the last 4 when my high school best friend got pregnant and I took up my needles again.
A friend brought me along to a knitting shop and I have been knitting ever since. It has been over 3 years.
I bought a little book with Tips for Quilters that was a compilation of comments, suggestions and ideas brought together from many knitters and teachers. . .one of the comments was to get something like this to hold the yarn while knitting. I am only knitting about 5 months and have three projects in work! Yikes, how did that happen?
Well my grandma taught me when I was 12 I believe, but I didn’t really do much with it, then my sister Katie (yes THAT Katie) came to visit me in Illinois and brought her knitting needles along and I picked it up again I believe that was about 2 years ago. As a side note Cheryl your oldest daughter MIGHT not be very happy with you telling her age Just saying :)
I’m now 24 and originally learned how to knit when I was 8 in Girl Scouts. Unfortunately, I had the attention span of an 8 year-old and soon moved on to something else. Fast forward 12 years and I rediscovered my love of knitting and haven’t stopped since. Talk about muscle memory–the motion came back immediately!

I’ve been knitting for 13 years now. I love the concept and looks of the yarn bowls, they’re simply brilliant!
In 7th grade we had a choice to learn to crochet or knit. I chose crochet because I thought on hook would surely be easier than 2 needles. Well, crochet wasn’t my thing…I didn’t have a great teacher either. I tried to teach myself because I loved yarn, but finally gave up. Fast forward 14 years and I gave knitting a try when I found a LionBrand teach yourself to knit kit and haven’t put my needles down for 14 years :) Those yarn bowl are beautiful!
My mom taught me to knit 10-15 years ago, but I just recently picked it up again. I love those bowls! So beautiful!
I taught myself using You-Tube videos in February 2011 after a challenge from a dear friend. I love the flexibility of sticking a project in my bag especially when waiting at the dentist or doctor, etc. I would love to give my friend a yarn bowl, cause I just bought one for myself. :-)

The first time I learned to knit was when my grandma taught me, oh around 8 1/2 years ago. Since that didn’t stick, last year – 7 months ago – I took some “refresher” classes :-)
I have been knitting for a little over a year and was taught by my daughter. I started by making a few dishcloths which had very large holes, and since then have worked on a few harder projects including a pair of warm felted slipper, which I love!

My mother taught me how to knit when I was a young girl-I made cute hats and sweaters for my own kids when they were young(my oldest is now 15) and now I have been knitting obsessively for about 4 years and my Mom is very impressed with my FO!

My first “real” knitting lessons was 20 days ago. Oh boy, right? And I’m waiting impatiently on more yarn so I can finish my first project. :) It’s been fun!
It has been almost three years for me. I started a baby blanket for a little boy. and had it finished by the time his little brother was born. Since then and in between I have tried many other projects and I have decided that I like fast projects the best!!!

My grandma taught me to knit when I was 6 or 7. 50+ years later I am still knitting and can feel her presence when I pick up my needles. As a matter of fact, some of the needles I am still using were originally hers.

Oooh, so pretty, I have been knitting for about two and a half years, since my daughter was about 6 months old :)
It has only been about 3 weeks since my first lesson from a very patient teacher!
Well, I was taught by my mum as a tot, so officially it’s been 32 years, but really…..I’m better at crochet. So this year I’m going to conquer my fear and work on increasing and decreasing in my knitting and hopefully by the end of the year I’ll be able to do it without dropping stitches.
I have only done crocheting…but I would give it to my 82 year old mom who has probably been knitting 6 hours a day since 19 or 20 and she is a former potter!!

I’ve been knitting for 12ish years. Stopped and started when my kids were babies. Oh those early projects which I worked so hard are horrible. Dropped stitches, purl instead of knit, rough edges
I’ve been crocheting for about a dozen years, but only started knitting about 3 years ago, when I started knitting every day for Lent. I hated it when I first started, because I could make things so much faster and easier with crochet, but by the end of Lent I was hooked, and I mostly knit now.
My Mother had a great mantra, you could,” NEVER SIT AROUND THE TELEVISION IDLE !!!!!!!” So she taught me how to knit! I’d say I’ve been knitting for about 45 years and I’m only 54!
Oooooh, I have wanted a yarn bowl for ever and ever! I learned to knit when I was about 10 years old, so that’s 26 years – but it’s only the last 6 years or so that I’ve become completely cuckoo obsessed. :-)

Ooh, I’ve always wanted a yarn bowl, and this one is so beautiful!! I’d use it all the time. I’ve been knitting seriously for 6 years now, but I learned back when I was about 7 or 8 years old, from my grandmother. Every now and then through the years I’d knit a scarf or something. I wish I had been doing it seriously back when I was in university- it would’ve been great to knit during lectures. Oh well. hindsight is 20-20.

When I saw 83 comments, I couldn’t believe it. But when I saw the beautiful yarn bowls, I understood why. I learned to knit from my mother when I was a kid — over 40 years ago (okay maybe it’s more like 55+ years) but have only gotten into it more in the last 1 1/2 years when my mother was at Woodlake and I needed something to do while hanging out there.
Approximately two years ago I took up knitting to pass the time while pregnant with my son. I was on bed rest at the time and it was the best thing I could have done at the time. I was hooked and occupied!
Melinda is teaching my daughters and me to knit. My girls are loving it. I am too but so far all I have is a pair of needles and two skeins of yarn. Melinda cast on for me, but I decided my knitting looked so diasterous that I unraveled it! I hope she is patient with me. Love your website. You are very creative, and my daughters love your projects.
Since working with your sister, I have decided to relearn to knit. I use to knit years ago, then had a knitting machine for several years, but have decided to knit by hand again.

I have been a knitter for about 10 yrs this month. I had been in and out of the hospital three times and my mother signed me up for knitting lessons and I went from there.
Knitting has gotten me through some rough times. It is what keeps me grounded.
I started knitting a few years ago, but only knit for one winter. However, I am planning on starting again now that I have more time.

Hmm… I’m hoping you hit 100 by noon! As you know, I once learned from Grandma Ryan, but didn’t remember it. I truly learned right after Christmas 2011 from 3 of my sisters. (ahem.) I love it, and can’t wait to have more time to figure out some harder patterns.

I used to spend my summers with my grandparents on our family farm. One summer, to keep me occupied and calm at the age of six, my grandmother taught me to knit… That was 22 years ago and my grandmother’s gone now, but I am still knitting and thinking of her!

I have been knitting since the weekend of Feburary 12th… when i was out in Rockville for Lydia’s wedding! I seen your blog and decided I found my new hobby! We stayed at Mark and Ashley Lanz’s and she helped me get started! Even sent me home with needles and yarn! I bought a book, did some youtube video watching and now I’m working on a scarf!! An easy beginner scarf, but a scarf! So thanks to you Rockville girls, my 15 month old rules the house during the day…because I’m knitting! ;)

I am a self-taught knitter of omg 13 years or so. I read several books and with a lot of trial and error I was knitting! For some reason the process is more important than the product for me. Also when I was pregnant with my son in 2009 I totally lost my mojo for 2 1/2 yrs. Happy to say I recently welcomed it back!

Been knitting on/off for 20+ years. My Mom taught me when I was about 8-10 years old. She was an excellent knitter. She often did custom projects for clients. I have fond memories of her knitting in the living room, in the car, on vacation…you name it! And the apple don’t fall far from the tree!
I still have the B&W Jack Frost pattern booklet, circa 1965, that she used to knit our mittens. As well as two sweaters that she made me that I aspire to fit into again.
I have all her needles and bits of yarn that I used when I was 8-10 years old. She died 5 years ago so it’s great to have this connection to her….
