Today I am sharing an old project with you–it’s my very first sweater & second knitting project ever! I originally learned to knit when I was young, maybe 7 or 8 years old, but I don’t believe I ever completed a project until a few years ago when I got back into knitting. My first project was a cabled scarf and I completed it feeling so confident in my knitting skills, that the only logical next project would be a full sweater. After all, if I could master cables then I should be able to make a sweater.  Looking back, I see a lot of issues and mistakes in this sweater, but it still makes its way out of my closet to be worn once or twice a year!

Pattern is available free from Drops Design Studio.  The directions are written well enough that I could get my way through this sweater on the first try!  The pattern clearly states that this pattern needs to be done in DK weight yarn or it won’t work. Turns out when I started this pattern and bought the yarn I had no idea what DK meant and I bought yarn that I thought “looked about right” when comparing it to the picture.  Here’s a tip: Never do that. At least not when making a sweater or a garment that you want to fit when you’re done.  In my case, it turned out OK but I wouldn’t advise anyone else to do the same.

I used Debbie Bliss Cotton Cashmere which is listed as a DK yarn, but it seems a little heavy. If I were to make this again, I would try and find something slightly lighter within the category.  I’m also not entirely convinced that this really has to be done in DK weight — several turn up on Ravelry in fingering weight!

I think I’m going to start calling my projects from this time period in my knitting life “Vintage“.  Everyone forgives a little issue here or there when you label it vintage.
